Planning the ultimate adventure in Africa? A little prep goes a long way, darling! Whether you’re off to see the Big 5 or soak up the sun on our stunning beaches, we're here to help you gear up. It’s not just about the destination, it’s about creating Insta-worthy memories. Let’s dive into the deets that will have you feeling like a travel pro before you even leave home.
Luxury is space, time, and silence
Our favourite gay-friendly luxury lodges across Africa, like those in the Sabi Sand, Maasai Mara, and Okavango Delta, book out months in advance – especially during peak season.
Planning ahead gives you the flexibility to craft the ultimate experience, from bespoke helicopter flights over the Okavango to private safari dinners under the stars. Plus, booking in advance secures those prime spots at top restaurants and ensures you’ll get the best international flights with minimal stopovers.
Before you get too excited about your safari, double-check your passport’s validity. It needs to be valid for at least six months after your travel dates, with at least two blank visa pages. Better safe than sorry, darling!
You also need at least a set of two blank visa pages in consecutive order, so you need one blank page on the left and one blank page on the right when you open it like a book. And you need this for each country you're visiting!
A stylish safari wardrobe starts with a simple colour scheme – think white, beige, khaki, and black – and three pieces of each item to create a new look every day.
Don’t forget layers! Early morning game drives can be chilly, but by midday, you’ll want to ditch that jacket and still look effortlessly chic. Packing light also leaves room for souvenirs that’ll make everyone jealous when you show them off later!
Safari fashion is diva level 10
Gurl, you’ll get thirsty! Keep your skin glowing with plenty of water, and don’t forget your reusable bottle (eco-friendly and fabulous!). In places like Victoria Falls, you can refill at EcoDrop stations across town. Stay hydrated and stay chic.
Although unlimited credit cards reign supreme, cash is still king, darling. Our Travel Gurus always recommend carrying cash in small denominations.
This will come in handy for tips, markets, and those little unexpected purchases. Your Travel Guru will fill you in on exactly how much you’ll need, so no stress there.
Africa’s restaurant scene is as vibrant as its culture, especially in places like Cape Town and the Winelands. But these spots are hot, hot, hot! So, make sure you book ahead, especially during the busy season, to score the best tables and tailor meals to your dietary needs.
Celebrating something special? Let them know in advance, and they’ll make your experience one to remember.
Feast on tasty culinary delights
Know where you need to be and when. Double-check your transfers and flight times to avoid any last-minute confusion. Your drivers will know you, but it helps if you know where you're going, too.
Pack those layers, but also check the forecast. Unexpected thunderstorms or a heatwave? You’ll want to be ready for anything, from sunscreen to comfy closed shoes if the rain catches you. Your Travel Guru will also help you pick the best time to travel based on what’s on your bucket list.
Travel insurance is a must! It’ll cover cancellations, medical emergencies, and unexpected trip interruptions. You want peace of mind while on a luxury safari, and this is your safety net.
Africa’s time is different, and sometimes, two o’clock is a suggestion. In our fast-paced world, we can become used to the rapid beat of time, going from the next thing to the next thing. However, Africa is very chilled, and you might feel that things are not as punctual as they are back home.
You also need a sense of humour! Your guides, hosts, butlers, and managers are some of the friendliest and funniest people you'll have the pleasure of meeting! Have fun, make jokes, and make friends along the way.
Africa is unlike any other place and will have a few funny surprises
Many safari destinations, like Kruger National Park in South Africa, require specific vaccinations and preventative medicine (like malaria vaccinations). Your medical professional will recommend necessary prescriptions based on the country you're travelling to.
If you have existing conditions like asthma or diabetes, you have to check in with your medical professional before your travels. They'll be able to advise on possible adjustments if necessary.
A Ki-what? A Kikoi is a versatile piece of linen or cotton cloth that can be used as a wrap-around, scarf, towel, or even a shawl. It’s comfy, light, and practical.
Kikois usually have colour patterns, so you should be able to find one in your favourite colour and pattern. If you travel to Africa during the hot summer months, you can drip your kikoi into icy water to cool yourself down on safari.
From booking the best luxury gay-friendly lodges to creating the best memories of your life, let our Travel Gurus craft your dream safari in Africa. The African wild is calling, and your adventure is just a booking away.
