The LGBTQ+ travel community is growing stronger and more vibrant each year, driven by creators who connect, inspire, and represent diverse queer stories worldwide. Recently, a group of influencers – including @michaelandmatt, @onairplanemode_, @raviroundtheworld, and @27travels – celebrated this spirit on a journey to South Africa’s Kruger National Park. Some of our Out2Africa team were lucky to join them, and to see the wonder grow in their eyes as we showed them glimpses of our sensational South African home…

As humans, we can feel so overstimulated by the constant stream of noise. As much as we love the convenience of technology and the sexy city adventures, it can become too much. And in Africa, the vast space all around is what really appeals to travellers from across the globe.
It was no different for Matthew Schueller and his fabulous crew, who came together not only to explore the wild beauty of the savannah but to deepen their bonds and reflect on the impact of their work. This journey wasn't just another content opportunity but a rare chance to let go of schedules and let Africa's rhythms lead the way.

It can still be quite intimidating for many from the LGBTQ+ community to come to Africa. Is it really safe? Will I really be accepted as I am? Well, when influencers like this bunch of bold and beautiful travellers create content that showcases the inclusive beauty of our continent, they inspire others to experience its wonders, too.
Kirstie Pike from @onairplanemode_ shared, “We all have the same vision: to be that LGBTQ+ representation in travel… we’re trying to lift up the community.” As a close-knit group of friends, they found solidarity and support amidst a world that often pits content creators against each other. “With us, we’re all friends first,” Gabi of @27travels explained, “and I think we leave space for each other… We know what we’re here for, what the bigger picture is.”

Their time at Kruger was both exhilarating and grounding, marked by encounters with South Africa’s Big 5, sunrise meditations, and moments unplugged from their digital lives.
The journey’s organiser, Ravi Roth (@raviroundtheworld), reflected on the transformative power of this trip: “When used with intention and purpose, these platforms can be more than a distraction – they can be tools for creating genuine connections, fostering community, and realising dreams.”

Wrapping up their adventure, the fabulous group took to Cape Town, exploring local LGBTQ+-owned businesses and taking in the city’s breathtaking views along Chapman’s Peak Drive.
Although most had visited the city before, this time felt different, especially because they could share it with each other. “We’ve been to Cape Town a few times, but riding in vintage sidecars and seeing it from ‘Chappies’ was like falling in love with the city all over again,” Shanna of @27travels remarked. “This wasn’t just sightseeing – it was a real opportunity to immerse ourselves in the culture, the people, and the energy of the city in a totally unique way.”
A trip to Cape Town wouldn't be complete without an excursion to the nearby Winelands. The group spent a day in Stellenbosch with the legendary Wine Fairy, Katie Barratt, who guided them through the region's renowned vineyards. Between tastings of bold pinotage, crisp sauvignon blanc, and other local varietals, they laughed, bonded, and made memories over each glass.
Ravi added, "Katie has this incredible energy that makes you feel instantly at home. I left that day with more than just a favourite wine – I felt like I'd gained a friend."
Their next stop? The colourful shores of Muizenberg Beach. Famous for its vibrant beach huts and surfer vibe, Muizenberg was the perfect place to relax, snap photos, and just enjoy the moment together. Here, they could fully embrace the carefree joy of travel – sun, sand, and good friends.
"There's something liberating about travelling as a group and feeling that sense of freedom," Michael said. "Cape Town welcomed us with open arms, and each place we visited felt like a celebration of who we are and the community we're building." For these content creators, this trip underscored how important it is to represent queer voices in travel – to show that LGBTQ+ travellers can feel free, safe, and celebrated in beautiful destinations like South Africa.
This trip was a testament to how travel can foster connection, resilience, and community in ways that go beyond any digital platform. Each stop on their journey offered a chance to unwind, reflect, and reinforce bonds that only grow stronger over time.
