The colonial-themed Royal Malewane, situated in Thornybush Private Game Reserve, takes your senses and stretches them, one by one, in directions you never thought possible.
Shaded by Acacia trees and surrounded by the African bush, the five-star game lodge has six luxury suites and two that can only be described as royal. The palatial luxury suites have fireplaces, antique furniture, canopied beds, extravagant bathrooms with plenty of elbow room, and a private pool and sundeck. The two royal suites, which sleep four, are a kingdom unto themselves with private butler, chef, safari vehicle and silver service dinners beneath the stars.
The thatched main lodge – an elegant expanse of dark wood, Persian carpets and antiques – houses the dining and living areas and the library. Dining is an elaborate ode to the senses and the surrounds and the wine list is staggering. The health and beauty spa is an open sala that will soothe your – by now – frayed senses and restore them to somewhere within their natural range.
You may need a pinch to remind you that this is Africa at its most raw and in its most unspoilt form; your ranger will provide that pinch at 5.30am when he wakes you – gently and with steaming cup – for your game drive. The reserve is famous for its abundant game and in particular high concentrations of the ‘big five’.
Countless birds, plants and other animals will invite fascinating insights from your highly knowledgeable and rather charming ranger and your walking safari will re-awaken your senses and introduce them to a whole new world.
