Known to be somewhat of an “eco-paradise”, Grootbos Private Nature Reserve is a favourite of ours. Situated between mountain and sea, the five-star reserve is only two hours from Cape Town and 30 minutes from Hermanus.
Grootbos overlooks Walker Bay and Gansbaai, both popular whale watching sites. There is a choice accommodation – stay in either the Grootbos Villa, Garden Lodge or Forest Lodge.
Constructed from stone, thatch and timber, Garden Lodge is surrounded by beautifully landscaped fynbos gardens and indigenous trees. Forest Lodge is located in the 1 200 hectares of fynbos in the reserve. Built from local sandstone and sustainably harvested timber, it blends seamlessly into its environment.
For something more exclusive, stay in Grootbos Villa. It offers luxury accommodation for up to 12 adults. Expect first-rate service, with your own private guide and private vehicle, butler, laundry and valet service. You’ll even have your own private chef (available for breakfast, lunch and dinner). Sadly you won’t be able to take him home with you.
You can also dine in one the two fantastic restaurants – whether you’re in want of a casual, buffet-style breakfast and lunch, or a gastronomical five-course dinner. Extend the pampering to some time in the Spa – with any kind of treatment possible, from shiatsu to full facials, in the comfort of your own suite, in the spa, or in a forest surrounded by ancient Milkwood trees.
Go on a guided wine tour through the Overberg countryside or take a Grootbos guide along on the following excursions in the area: whale watching, shark cage diving, walks and hikes, 4X4 flower safari, cave tour, beaches, bird watching, horse riding, quad biking and scenic flights.
