Chobe Game Lodge is a tiled and rough-clad maze of courtyards, passages and verandahs that leads out to the Chobe River spread out like an oil slick across the great flood plain.

The 46 rooms have barrel-vaulted ceilings and high archways that frame the ever-present view of the river. If you want to spoil yourself, go for one of the four suites. With private plunge pools, sundecks and separate lounges, the seclusion will surely fire up the flames for an African romance. All rooms have air conditioning, ceiling fans, a mini bar and a private terrace with river views.

Dining is either a table d’hôte extravaganza on the river-facing terrace or a sumptuous buffet on the lawn under a giant mahogany tree. The food is a westerner’s introduction to local ingredients and the wine list features some of South Africa’s finest offerings.

Other facilities include a large riverside pool, a bar with full size billiard table, business lounge, fully equipped gym and a health and beauty spa.

Inclusive wildlife activities take in the surrounding territory in 4X4 open-sided vehicles and on specially adapted riverboats – elephants outnumber guests in the park by a few thousand to one and there are plenty of big game species, predators and birdlife.

Walking safaris in the nearby Kasane Forest provide an exciting and informative encounter and a chance to experience true wilderness with all your senses. Sunset cruises on the well-stocked Mosi-oa-Tunya are a ridiculously relaxing way to the end the day and start the evening – time for stargazing with your ranger and storytelling beside the fire in the boma.
